The United States has not sent astronauts to the Moon since NASA's Apollo missions of the 1960s and '70s. "We are excited to announce that SpaceX has been approached to fly two private citizens on a trip around the moon late next year," said a statement by CEO Elon Musk. "This presents an opportunity for humans to return to deep space for the first time in 45 years and they will travel faster and further into the solar system than any before them." The tourists, who were not named, "have already paid a significant deposit," Musk's statement added. Health tests and training are to begin this year. "Other flight teams have also expressed strong interest and we expect more to follow. Additional information will be released about the flight teams, contingent upon their approval and confirmation of the health and fitness test results," Musk said. The tourists will ride aboard the California-based company's Crew Dragon capsule, which is scheduled for its first unmanned test flight later this year. It is based on the design currently used to send cargo to the International Space Station, with upgrades to allow for human transport. The capsule will launch atop SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket, which is scheduled for its first test flight this summer. The rocket "will be the most powerful vehicle to reach orbit after the Saturn V moon rocket," Musk said. "At five million pounds of liftoff thrust, Falcon Heavy is two-thirds the thrust of Saturn V and more than double the thrust of the next largest launch vehicle currently flying." - Commercial space race - Musk -- who co-founded PayPal and also heads Tesla Motors -- is seen as the emerging leader of the modern commercial space industry, after becoming the first to send a private cargo carrier to the International Space Station in 2010. Social stratification refers to a system by which a society ranks categories of people in a hierarchy. Let's examine some of the theories surrounding this concept. Definition of Social Stratification Social stratification refers to a system by which a society ranks categories of people in a hierarchy. In the United States, it is perfectly clear that some groups have greater status, power, and wealth than other groups. These differences are what led to social stratification. Social stratification is based on four major principles: Social stratification is a trait of society, not simply a reflection of individual differences Social stratification persists over generations Social stratification is universal (it happens everywhere) but variable (it takes different forms across different societies) Social stratification involves not just inequality but beliefs as well (inequality is rooted in a society's philosophy) Why does social stratification exist, and why are some countries more stratified than others? To analyze this question, we can look at social stratification through three major perspectives: structural functionalism, social conflict, and symbolic interaction. The Functions of Social Stratification Structural functionalists argue that social inequality plays a vital role in the smooth operation of a society. The Davis-Moore thesis states that social stratification has beneficial consequences for the operation of society. Davis and Moore argue that the most difficult jobs in any society are the most necessary and require the highest rewards and compensation to sufficiently motivate individuals to fill them. Certain jobs, like mowing grass or cleaning toilets, can be performed by almost anyone, while other jobs, such as performing brain surgery, are difficult and require the most talented people to perform them. In order to lure the most talented people away from less important work, a society must offer those people rewards and incentives. Davis and Moore further claim that any society can be equal, but only to the extent that people are willing to let anyone perform any job. This would also require that even those who do their job poorly are rewarded equally. What would be the incentive for people to do their best if everyone was rewarded equally? Stratification and Conflict Social conflict theorists disagree that social stratification is functional for a society. Instead, they argue that social stratification benefits some at the expense of others. Two theorists, Karl Marx and Max Weber, are the primary contributors to this perspective. Karl Marx was a German philosopher, sociologist, economist, and revolutionary socialist. He based his theory on the idea that society has two classes of people: the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. (Reuters/Toru Hanai) SHARE WRITTEN BY Itika Sharma Punit 48 mins ago Quartz India Artificial intelligence (AI) is being counted (pdf) among the hottest startup sectors in India this year, but the highly specialised space is struggling to grow due to the lack of a primary input: engineers. “Forget getting people of our choice, we don’t even get applications when we advertise for positions for our AI team,” said 25-year-old Tushar Chhabra, co-founder of Cron Systems, which builds internet of things (IOT)-related solutions for the defence sector. “It’s as if people are scared of the words ‘artificial intelligence.’ They start freaking out when we ask them questions about AI.” India has over 170 startups focused purely on AI, which have together raised over $36 million. The sector has received validation from marquee investors like Sequoia Capital, Kalaari Capital, and business icon Ratan Tata. But entrepreneurs are struggling to expand due to a shortage of engineers with skills related to robotics, machine learning, analytics, and automation. Racetrack.ai co-founders Subrat Parida and Navneet Gupta say that around 40% of their working time is spent searching for the right talent. Bengaluru-based Racetrack.ai has built an AI-driven communication bot called Marvin. “People are the core strength of a startup. So hiring for a startup is very challenging. We are not looking for the regular tech talent and, since AI is a relatively new field in India, you don’t get people with past experience in working on those technologies,” Parida, also the CEO, told Quartz. The shortage Only 4% of AI professionals in India have actually worked on cutting-edge technologies like deep learning and neural networks, which are the key ingredients for building advanced AI-related solutions, according to recruitment startup Belong, which often helps its clients discover and recruit AI professionals. Also, many such companies require candidates with PhD degrees in AI-related technologies, which is rare in India. While it takes a company just a month to find a good app developer, it could take up to three months to fill up a position in the AI space, said Harishankaran K, co-founder and CTO of HackerRank, which helps companies hire tech talent through coding challenges. The reasons India is among the top countries in terms of the number of engineers graduating every year. But the engineering talent here has traditionally been largely focused on IT and not research and innovation. “Fields like AI require a mindset of research and experimentation. But most aspiring engineers in India follow a pattern: finish school, go to IIT, do an MBA, and then take up a job,” said PK Viswanathan, professor of business intelligence at the Great Lakes Institute of Management in Chennai. “To work on AI, you need people who not only have a strong technology background, but also have analytical thinking, puzzle-solving skills, and they should not be scared of numbers,” he added. Ironically, the subject has been a part of the curriculum at some engineering schools for almost a decade. However, what is taught there is mostly irrelevant to the real world. Sachin Jaiswal, who graduated from IIT Kharagpur in 2011, studied some aspects of AI back in college. But whatever he is doing at his two-year-old startup Niki.ai—it has built a bot that lets users order anything through a chat interface—is based on what he learned in his earlier jobs, he said. “A lot of people are disillusioned when they come out of college and begin their first jobs,” said Jaiswal, whose startup is backed by Ratan Tata. In fact, even now, when he interacts with graduates from elite institutes to hire them, he sees a glaring gap between what these youngsters have learned and what is needed on the work floor. Given the shortage of AI-related talent in India, several startups aspire to tap Silicon Valley. But that’s not a feasible solution for young teams. A few months back, Chhabra of Cron Systems was in talks with a US-based engineer, an IIT-Delhi alumnus working on AI for seven years. “The guy asked for Rs2.5 crore per annum as salary. As a startup you cannot afford that price,” said Chhabra. Finding solutions Cron Systems has found a jugaad to solve their problem, Chhabra said. Late last year, the company hired a bunch of engineers with basic skills needed to create AI-related solutions and trained them. “We broke down AI into smaller pieces and hired six tech professionals who understood those basic skills well. Then we conducted a three-month training for these people and brought them onboard with what we do,” Chhabra said. Niki.ai, too, is following this hire-and-train model. “Training takes time and investment but we have no option because we need the talent,” Jaiswal of Niki.ai told Quartz. “If we had better access to talent, things would have been better.” Gurugram-based AI startup Staqu has started partnering with academic institutions to build a steady pipeline of engineers and researchers. Hopeful Despite this struggle, entrepreneurs and investors in India feel bullish. In an ecosystem where e-commerce and food delivery hog the limelight, a recent report by venture lending firm InnoVen Capital named AI one of the “most under-hyped sectors.” But that is set to change, said London-based angel investor Sanjay Choudhary. In September 2016, Choudhary invested in Delhi-based AI startup Corseco Technologies. He regularly interacts with the company’s team and the “genuine issue of finding talent” comes up frequently, he told Quartz. “India is a late entrant into the AI space and talent crunch will be a challenge for the industry for some time to come,” he said. “But I plan to continue investing in AI in India because I feel that the space has a lot of potential and needs to be supported.” While there seems no end to the struggle, Jaiswal of Niki.ai sees a silver lining: “Talent crunch ensures that companies can’t enter the field easily. These countries include most of the Philippines' Southeast Asian neighbors, but also Latin American tourist destinations Brazil, Peru, Bolivia and Costa Rica. GMA News Online requested the information from the DFA after noting widespread online glee several weeks ago over a Facebook post that listed about 60 countries where Filipinos can go visa-free. After sending queries to Philippine embassies and consular posts, the DFA would only confirm 20 countries. But its public information office added that they are still waiting to hear from some overseas posts. GMA News Online also called up embassies of countries missing on the DFA list and filled gaps in the information. The information provided in the viral Facebook post supposedly came from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Qantas, Wikipedia, Visalink, and VisaHq.ph. The map below shows visa requirements of each country with a pin. According to Buffett, while most students are at an age where they can still easily develop good habits, once you get older, it’s virtually impossible to change your behavior. But scientist Ann Graybiel thinks age is not as big a factor as many people think. The approach Buffett suggests to students is quite simple. Look around you and think about whom you like the most. What makes you like or admire these people? Do the same thing for people you don’t like. What are the behavioral traits that cause you to dislike those people? Buffett explains that his mentor, Benjamin Graham, used this approach to modify his own behavior as a young adult. Graham was co-author of the seminal book on value investing, The Intelligent Investor, and he was also Buffett’s professor at Columbia University. At 54 years old I’m at least twice as old as the students Warren Buffett addresses. But I’m a stubborn person. In spite of what my mirror shouts out to me every morning about my physical appearance, I still have the mindset of a 20 year old. So I decided that, going into 2017, I should try out Buffett’s approach. I thought about the people I interact with and listed the traits of those I most like, along with the traits of people I like less. I like kindness and generosity, modesty, sincerity and good humor. I like disciplined and goal-oriented people. I especially like people who have healthy lifestyles. I dislike selfishness, unclear intentions, sarcasm and gossip. I dislike people who blame all their problems on external forces, and those who are perpetually dissatisfied. I especially dislike people who are coercive. But before setting out to change my own habits, I decided to second-guess Warren Buffett by finding out what scientists think of his approach and my list of good and bad habits. So as the year 2016 came to a close I got on the phone with renowned expert on the neurophysiology of habit formation, Ann Graybiel to ask a few questions. MIT professor, director of the Graybiel laboratory at MIT and recipient of the National Medal of Science in 2001, surely Dr. Graybiel would have an opinion on the set of habits I listed. Pat Brans: What do you think of Warren Buffett’s approach to developing habits? Ann Graybiel: Buffett is a marvel and he has good ideas here. Habit by imitation is a wonderful idea. The ancient Greeks wrote a lot about that. Finding mentors is truly important in life. However, I don’t necessarily agree with Warren Buffett on the part about getting too old to develop new habits. Brans: Wow! That’s great news for me, a 54 year old. Tell me more about age and habits. Graybiel: I don’t think it’s ever too late to change habits or to make new ones. I do know that it seems more difficult to acquire new habits as one gets older. But I think that has a lot to do with the time constraints of older people. The older you get, the busier you get—if you are working and taking care of your family—and so the less likely you are to devote an hour a day or so to working on things like being modest. But this all in the end comes down to motivation and weighing different priorities in life. And motivation very much depends on reinforcements—good ones and bad ones. Brans: Are the things I’ve listed as good and bad habits truly habits in the same way breathing or eating—or even learning to ride a bicycle—are habits? In other words, are all these things supported by similar brain functions? Graybiel: It’s hard to come up with an adequate definition of habit—and it’s even harder to make the difference between habits and skills. Let’s say it takes you months to learn a difficult piano piece by Bach. Then you stop playing it for several years. When you come back to it, you’ll re-learn it in a fraction of the original time. Part of what’s happening when habits form is what we call “chunking.” You learn the behavioral pattern and your brain packages up the whole sequence, along with beginning and ending markers, so that you no longer have to think of the details. Cues typically start the sequence—we all know that: Just seeing where the candy is kept makes the habit of eating one that much stronger. I’m pretty sure that this is because the same fundamental neural mechanisms that control what we all think of as habits—you know, the fellow puts his right hand in his pocket and jingles his keys every time he’s thinking, or she brushes her teeth before she combs her hair—also control the kinds of traits Warren Buffett talks about. We know now that just as there are descending pathways in the brain, that for many years were called “central pattern generators,” which control things like eating and breathing and walking, there are other pathways that go up from the basal ganglia toward the neocortex—the part of the brain that controls higher level thinking. I believe these pathways going into the neocortex are crucial to doing the very things you’ve listed. We call them “cognitive pattern generators.” These pathways serve to generate the de novo patterns of behavior that can become habits. But we have to watch out. Because unlike some of the motor patterns that get glued into the spinal cord and brain stem, these circuits are rather vulnerable. We have to tend them more than we have to tend the ones in the lower functions of the brain. These 'habit' patterns in the brain have to get renewed reinforcement from time to time. We’ve found in the lab that the habit patterns can be flipped on and off by the neocortex—it is quite amazing. Brans: Now I’m fully on board. What approach would you advise me to take to change in 2017 based on the two lists I’ve made of good and bad habits? Graybiel: I think there are some tricks to keep in mind when you’re trying to learn the wonderful qualities you’ve brought up. You need context, reinforcement, consistency and hard work. I tell people that if you want to jog in the morning, put out the shoes and the gear the night before so you see them first thing in the morning. If you want to eat better, put fruit out on your kitchen table. For the behavior traits you’re talking about, you also have to put yourself in the right context, at least as you are learning the new behavior. Similarly, the attributes you listed, such as being kind or having a good sense of humor, may require some artificial reinforcement. We have to think through the long-term consequences, which is what you might call delayed reinforcement. We can assure ourselves that when we perform the behavior it will in the long run bring about a positive consequence to ourselves and to others. There seems to be a war going on among the circuits. Some of them want us to be one way; some of them want us to be the other way. We have to realize that this isn’t child’s play. This is our flexible brain. Do you want to be kind and modest, or not? You have to make a commitment, and you have to put in place some kind of positive reinforcement. The good news is that once you develop a habitual behavior, your brain then seems to treat it as a whole. As I said, this is when the pattern gets chunked. To get to that point, you have to do the whole thing over and over. This may be arduous at first. But over time, the behavior you are working on will become a habit. I’m a big fan of William James. I haven’t found anything that equals William James’ 1890 essay on habits, in which he advises, “Never suffer an exception to occur till the new habit is securely rooted in your life.” This is a key point. If you work on a habit all week and then decide to take a day off because it’s Saturday, you’ll fall right back into the old habit. So developing habits is effortful. But what a reward to get there, to learn something new! And in the process, you learn about yourself.
